Let me just get started by saying that I am a big believer in marriage equality. But just because I believe that, doesn't mean that everyone else thinks the same thing. According to SBS News, there are only 26 countries in the world that have allowed same-sex marriage. Here is that list of countries: The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina, Denmark, France, Brazil, Uruguay, New Zealand, The UK, Ireland, The U.S., Luxembourg, Colombia, Greenland, Finland, Slovenia, Malta, Germany, and Australia. Only 26 out of a whopping total of 195 countries in the world have legalized same-sex marriage. This is a crazy ratio and it will, unfortunately, take a very long time to even get to 50 countries. It's not just the amount of countries that bothers me, it's also the way that they treat the LGBT community in certain countries. Let's take a look at this next ratio. If you thought that the first one was crazy, this one will shock you. Out of the 169 countries that haven't legalized same-sex marriage, 72 of them view it as a crime. Some even consider the DEATH PENALTY as a result of any homosexual act. This disgusts me and makes me very honored to be in a country where these acts against the LGBT community are not permitted by the government. On a better note, this past year there have been so many countries that have supported marriage equality, and with this gain comes a great future for the LGBT+ community. It started in 2001 with The Netherlands, and the most recent country to make it legal is Australia in December of 2017. That's 26 countries in 16 years. If we can get 26 more by 2034, the total number of countries would go over 50. I am extremely happy for this big step in creating a better society that doesn't judge people for who they love. There are still hate groups in many of these countries, but little by little we are changing people's perspectives on topics like this. There are so many problems in the world that are way worse than people marrying the same sex. I mean, what about world hunger, people? Or maybe diseases that are killing large populations? Here is my new year's resolution. Let's focus on the real problems in 2018, and maybe we will actually change the world for the better.
Dear Internet,
Thank you for existing. I don't know if I would be able to live without you. You fill my heart with joy. You can be magical. Wonderful. Incredible. You can be fun for all ages, and you can let everyone be themselves. But sometimes, you don't. You can be terrible. Disgusting. Horrible. You can makes kids cry, and you can make everyone change themselves because they aren't "normal." You talk teens down, and make them hate themselves more than they already do. Look, i'll give you the benefit of the doubt. You have funny memes and Youtube is pretty great. I don't do my homework until last minute because I'm procrastinating on Youtube. The other thing you do though, which is not so great, is have hate comments on those videos. You talk about these people like they are the scum of the world, and you scream hate words at the innocent. It is disgusting, it really is. Dear Internet, I have a name to call you. Two-faced. At one moment, you can make someone as happy as they can be. And then you can turn and make someone want to end their lives. It's a cruel game you're playing, internet. So, although you can be amazing, you can also be the worst thing to happen in someone's life. Watch what you say, internet, or else someone will have to put a bar of soap in your mouth. 1. I believe in love at first sight.
2. I believe that everyone can start over from scratch. 3. I believe that the internet is a magical place that should not be taken for granted. 4. I believe in equality for all, no matter your race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc... 5. I believe that men and women should have equal rights. 6. I believe that winter is the best season. 7. I believe that people can change. 8. I believe that happiness comes before success. 9. I believe that ghosts are real, you can't deny it. 10. I believe that you should forgive rather than hold a grudge for too long. 11. I believe that whatever's out there, it wants us to be nice to one another. 12. I believe that we should stop being petty and stop getting triggered at little things that make us mad when bigger problems are happening in the world. 13. I believe that it will take a LONG TIME to achieve world peace, but until that day comes we need to stick together instead of fight with each other. 14. I believe that everyone deserves an education. 15. I believe that women in less-fortunate countries deserve the same rights as men. 16. I believe that cats will rule the world someday. 17. I believe that one person can change the world for the better, or for the worse. 18. I believe in miracles. 19. I believe that cheese is the best thing in the world. 20. I believe that Spongebob is my spirit animal. |
